Pair of Davenport Plates (1870-75)
A pair of cabinet Davenport plates made in 1870-1875, near the end of the factories existence.
Cabinet pieces were meant for display and would not be used at table because the action of knives and forks would damage the delicate painting and gilding.
The pictures of lakes and mountains are hand painted and the ring of gold surrounding the pictures is raised to form a zig-zag and dot pattern. The edge of the plates includes raised “jewelled” ovals in white on the pink rim. Jewelled ornamentation became popular about this time and extended into the early 20th century. The plates are marked in brick red with a crown over the words Davenport, Longport, Staffordshire. The pattern number is 1898 with a decorators tally mark of 5. The plate diameters are 230 mm and the depth is fairly standard at 25 mm.
