Ridgway Plate (1813)

Ridgway was one of the new factories of the 19th century making bone china porcelain. This plate dates from about 1813 when John and William Ridgway, the sons of Job had taken over the business. The border is heavily gilded on top of a dark cobalt blue and the centre is decorated in a limited palette of stylised leaves in cobalt blue with gold veins and flowers in manganese pink, common at this time. The gadrooned edge became very fashionable later in the 19th century on cups, saucers and on plates. The pattern number of the plate is 1233 written in bold red numbers inside the base rim. The diameter is 251 mm and the depth is 28 mm.
